Library Licenses

All of the libraries used in the MetroViz system fall into two categories. The first category includes commercial software from Microsoft, such as the .NET Framework runtime necessary to run Visual Basic.NET software. We also leverage Microsoft Office for report generation and our help documents. The .NET Framework can be freely redistributed according to its license from Microsoft. Microsoft Office must be licensed and installed for use in order for the above features to function properly.

The second category of libraries includes several open-source solutions used for core subsystems of MetroViz. All of these libraries are licensed with liberal permissions for redistribution and modification. They place no additional licensing requirements on any MetroViz installation within the City of Pittsburgh organization. If MetroViz is distributed outside the city, the only additional obligation is to provide access to the original source code of the NHibernate library. This must only be provided if a MetroViz user requests the source, so in practical terms this is unlikely to be a significant burden.

MetroViz License

MetroViz itself is also licensed with a liberal open-source license. The only obligation we impose is that the copyright statement in the About window remain intact. However, we also request a good-faith effort to contact at least one of the original team members if the software is distributed outside of the City of Pittsburgh. The complete text of the legal license of MetroViz is included below.
